About

California Explores the Ocean (CEO) was a collaborative endeavor to digitize a selection of primary source materials from the former Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library and Archives and the San Diego Historical Society (now the UC San Diego Library Special Collections & Archives Program and the San Diego History Center, respectively). The project was supported by a 2001 federal grant awarded by the California State Library through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). The CEO website facilitated searching and discovery of archival manuscripts, texts, images, and sound recordings related to ocean research conducted at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, in addition to historical materials on ocean resources owned by the San Diego History Center.

In 2020, the CEO website was edited to eliminate dated and redundant content, update frames, restore links, and improve the user experience. New content, including archival texts, images and recordings, has not been added to the website since the completion of the grant in 2001-02. To begin your research related to the field of oceanography and to learn about additional resources made available by the UC San Diego Library, please see the library subject guides at Oceanography, Earth & Marine Sciences. An archived version of the original CEO website can be viewed here.

Unique archival materials linked from the CEO website are available on the UC San Diego Library's Digital Collections page, along with other digitized resources. Publications, such as Fish Bulletins and Fish Catch Statistics, are also available on the University of California's eScholarship website.
