PHOTOGRAPHIC RESOURCES

Over 7,000 images relating to oceanographic issues, fish and fisheries, agar processing, whaling, coastal locations and geography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives and the San Diego Historical Society can be accessed from this site using the CONTENTdm Digital Media Management Software Suite. Scanned drawings, blueprints, diary excerpts, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and oceanographic instruments can also be found here.

| Digitization |
With a few exceptions, all images were digitized by Luna Imaging, Inc. The standards adhered to for digital capture are based on the California Digital Library Digital Image Format Standards, 2001.
Source material represented nitrate and safety film negatives, 35mm slides and print photographs. All images were written in uncompressed TIFF 6.0 format to CD-Rom media.
Negatives:
4 x 5 inches captured at 6,144 pixels on the long-side
Resulting 8-bit grayscale files at 20 MB
Resulting 24-bit color files at 70-80 MB
35mm Slides:
Captured at 3,072 pixels on the long-side
Resulting 24-bit color files at 18 MB
Print Photographs:
4 x 5 inches captured at 3,072 pixels on the long-side
Resulting 8-bit grayscale files at 7 MB
Resulting 24-bit color files at 20 MB
4 x 5 to 8 x 10 inches captured at 6,144 pixels on the long-side
Resulting 8-bit grayscale files at 20 MB
Resulting 24-bit color files at 20 MB
For the SIO Archives, three compressed derivative versions of each image were produced:
Thumbnail JPEG: 192 pixels (long-side)
Medium resolution JPEG: 768 pixels (long-side)
High resolution JPEG: 1536 pixels (long-side)
For efficient use within Web based applications, the SIO Archives is presenting on this site a thumbnail (automatically generated by CONTENTdm) and a medium resolution JPEG at 768 pixels on the long-side. The San Diego Historical Society has chosen to display a thumbnail (automatically generated) and a JPEG of 384 pixels on the long-side.
